The finest example of the Hellenistic pastoral novel, Daphnis and Chloe is the charming love story of a boy and a girl who are each abandoned at birth, found and raised by kindly peasants, and fall in love. Yet they are still too innocent to know what love is, and must defend themselves against the advances of various older men and women enthralled by their beauty (and often willing to resort to force). We will read the second half of the novel in this course, and discuss it in Ancient Greek.
