High School Latin 1: September 2024 - June 2025

In this course your student will learn Latin through engaging pictures, sentences, and short stories. No need to spend hours suffering through grammar charts and dry vocabulary lists that get you nowhere. Instead, you will begin listening to, understanding, speaking, reading, and laughing in Latin from the very first day of class. This course is designed particularly for high school students (grades 9-12) as well as for middle school students who have previous Latin experience. After completing High School Latin 1, students will move on to High School Latin 2.

High School Latin 1 Course Outcomes

  • Read extensive Latin prose narratives with ease and enjoyment.
  • Discuss Latin prose narratives in spoken Latin.
  • Participate in Socratic Q & A in class conducted entirely in Latin.
  • Acquire a command of 200+ common Latin vocabulary words.
  • Learn to accurately recognize and correctly produce the following:
    • The six cases of Latin nouns in all five declensions.
    • The present indicative active of the Latin verb.
    • The present indicative passive of the Latin verb in the 3rd person.
    • The imperative and infinitive moods of the Latin verb.
    • The Latin adjective system, including comparative and superlative degrees.
  • Understand the syntax of the simple sentence in Latin.
  • Encounter basic historical, philological, artistic, and cultural facts about the ancient Romans and their world.

What You Need to Know

  1. Classes run on a normal academic calendar year: September – June.
  2. High School Latin 1 will be split into three different sections.
    1. L1H Section A will meet on Tuesdays, 4pm – 5pm Pacific (7pm – 8pm Eastern)
    2. L1H Section B will meet on Thursdays, 9am – 10am Pacific (12pm – 1pm Eastern)
    3. L1H Section C will meet on Saturdays, 11:30am – 12:30pm Pacific (2:30pm – 3:30pm Eastern)
  3. Classes are live, online classes run by ALI Latin professors. Learn Latin from anywhere. All you need is a wifi connection and computer enabled with microphone and video.
  4. We have separate tracks for elementarymiddle, and high school students. While they move at different paces and use a variety of materials, they all end up in the same place: Giving your student the tools to read Latin texts with ease.

  6. You can skip the academic calendar system. With one-on-one Tutorials, you can set up your own class schedule with an ALI professor.
