Xenophon was an Athenian general, statesman, historian, and student of the philosopher Socrates. He also possessed that Greek genius for cosmopolitanism and interest in other cultures, whether a rival polis like Sparta or a rival empire like Persia. In Κύρου Παιδεία, also known as the Cyropaedia or The Education of Cyrus, Xenophon wrote a work unique for the Ancient Greeks: a novelistic biography providing advice and exhortation. In this account of Cyrus the Great’s rise and reign, Xenophon not only tells a great tale, but ends up inspiring some of the greatest writers of the Renaissance and Enlightenment, both with the subject matter of his work as well as the clarity of his style. In this course, we will be reading carefully selected, unadapted excerpts from Xenophon’s Cyropaedia and discussing them in Ancient Greek.
