The famous Behistun Inscription is a massive relief and royal epic carved into a cliff face in Iran. It is Darius the Great’s account of his rise to power, and was the “Rosetta Stone” for cuneiform. In this course, run largely in Ancient Greek, we will become acquainted with Old Persian cuneiform, Old Persian grammar, and read various inscriptions, culminating in a close read of the Behistun Inscription. Students should have completed at least 2 years of prior Ancient Greek study (or be able to read Plato or a similar author comfortably), since the class will be run in Greek and Old Persian grammar and vocabulary will be explained with reference to Greek vocabulary and grammatical terms.
