In this course, you will begin reading the greatest Old English poem in its original language. This course covers the first third of the poem, consisting of approximately 1000 lines of verse, as well as the first of Beowulf’s three battles: the fight with the mearcstapa Grendel. As we read, we will explore the rich world the poem paints for us, delving not only into the poem itself but also its historical, religious, linguistic, mythological, and literary context.
