Few men have inspired such extremes of hate and of love as the great philosopher Socrates. His preeminent student, Plato, recorded (embellished? invented?) the speeches made at Socrates’ trial before the Athenian Assembly, the trial that led to his execution, in a dialogue that is perhaps the most widely read philosophical work in the world. In this class, we will be reading Plato’s rendering of the Apology of Socrates in its entirety, and discussing it in Ancient Greek.

His special interests include ancient grammatical texts as well as the use of poetry in language teaching. In 2020, he and his wife decided to resettle in rural Austria from where they both teach classical languages in different capacities.
