Tempus tantum nostrum est
In this course, students will be immersed in the rich philosophical and literary world of Stoicism and the later years of the Julio-Claudian dynasty by reading the Epistulae ad Lucilium. These letters were written by Seneca, the Roman senator, philosopher, and dramatist. Through discussion and close reading of these letters, students will explore themes such as friendship, mortality, and enduring hardship. As they continue to develop their proficiency in reading primary sources in Latin as well as speaking in a Classical Latin idiom, students will also discuss Stoic philosophy and its relative merits for guidance toward virtue.
