Drop the grammar charts. Drop the gimmicks.
The point of learning Greek is to learn how to read Greek texts. Too many Greek programs and textbooks either drill you in memorizing verb endings or distract you with entertaining gimmicks – and they never get to the real meat and potatoes: Sitting down and reading great Greek works like the Bible, Attic drama, philosophy, and epic verse at length. No wonder, then, that more than anything else, what students learn in Greek class is that the language is impossible to learn: It’s all Greek to me!
It doesn’t have to be this way.
Your kids can have fun learning Greek, and they can actually make measurable progress.
How do we do it? The secret’s in the sauce. We call our approach to language teaching the “direct method,” inspired in large part by the tried and tested practices of humanist pedagogues like John Amos Comenius, W.H.D. Rouse, and Tim Griffith, as well as the insights of second language acquisition researchers like Stephen Krashen and Bill VanPatten, who have championed the concepts of “comprehensible input” (large amounts of understandable communication in the target language) and “comprehensible output” (language learning takes place as students search for a way to communicate messages in the target language) as the keys to any language learning program.
Should We Study Koine Greek or Ancient Greek?
Attic Greek, the dialect spoken in the Athens of Socrates and Plato, was the gold standard of literary Greek, but as the language spread across the Mediterranean during the time of Alexander the Great and then under the Roman Empire, some of the complexities got flattened out. The result was a pan-Mediterranean, least-common-denominator Greek. While lacking the stateliness of Attic Greek, this variety was accessible to diverse people groups ranging from Rome to North Africa to the Near East. It was koine, i.e., “common.” Koine Greek was born.
When people talk about “biblical Greek,” they’re talking about this “common” or koine form of Ancient Greek. Because the writers of the New Testament were living in the Near East under the Roman Empire, Greek (in its Koine variety) was the universal language. This means that biblical Greek is not its own language. It is just the “common” form which Ancient Greek took in the later part of the ancient era, after Athens and Sparta had fallen to Alexander the Great.
What was lost in the shift from Attic to Koine? The difference is not as big as you might think. Certain verb endings became less common. The dual number vanished, leaving only the singular and plural. Participles waned in popularity. Similar minor changes occurred throughout the language. Not a whole lot more.
That is why at the Ancient Language Institute, we study Ancient Greek in its totality, equipping students with the ability to read texts in Koine, Attic, and the other forms that the Greek language took in the ancient world. If you’d like to learn more about our methods and how they relate to the different dialects of Ancient Greek, this Attic vs. Koine essay will help you out.

Greek for Kids
Many parents who are looking for a Greek homeschool curriculum or who are looking for a Greek for children program don’t know where to turn. There are some products on the market for kids, but very little data or evidence that their approaches work. In fact, many classical education companies and Greek curriculum options sell students short: They don’t believe that kids can really learn to read Ancient Greek. That’s why they teach kids to memorize grammar tables or have them watch distracting, substance-free videos.
These vendors and educators don’t even believe in their own Greek teaching mission.
But we do. We know your child can learn Greek – because we have seen other kids learn it, over and over again.
So connect with us and our specially designed Greek for kids, full-service program. All you have to do is sign up, work with us to schedule a meeting time, and watch your student learn.
