Few men have inspired such extremes of hate and of love as the great philosopher Socrates. His preeminent student, Plato, recorded (embellished? invented?) the speeches made at Socrates’ trial before the Athenian Assembly, the trial that led to his execution, in a dialogue that is perhaps the most widely read philosophical work in the world. In this class, we will be reading Plato’s rendering of the Apology of Socrates in its entirety, and discussing it in Ancient Greek.
