Seminar: Theory and Practice of Latin Teaching

Summer Semester L500

Current and future Latin teachers, this course is for you!

When teaching ancient languages, should teachers use different methods than when teaching modern ones? What if the language is dead? In this course we will discuss the fundamental issues of language pedagogy. We will not only deal with important theoretical questions such as, “What is a language?” or “How useful is translation as an exercise for language learners?” but we will also do some very practical exercises in order to prepare teachers to reenter the classroom with a new set of tools. What good, after all, are pedagogical theories if they don’t benefit the classroom?

  • Cost: $500
  • Seminar Details:
    • Sessions last 1.5 hours
    • 1 session per week
    • Course lasts 8 weeks
    • Begins week of June 7
  • ALI classes are completely risk-free: Get a 100% refund anytime before your second class session
    • Refunds after the second class session are done on a pro rata basis

Q: Is this the right course for me?

A: If you are a current Latin teacher, then yes, this course is for you! You will benefit from time to interact with fellow teachers, delve into Second Language Acquisition research and theory, and develop new tools and skills you can bring back to your classroom. On the other hand, if you are a prospective or future Latin teacher, then this course is also for you! You will get to interact with experienced teachers, build your own curricular toolkit, and add a unique mark of distinction to your resume as you enter the job market. This class will be conducted mostly in English, however, we will be using Latin when doing mock classroom activities, so you should already possess some Latin proficiency. Please get in touch if you are unsure if you qualify for the course.
