In Aeneid Seminar 4, we read and discuss the most beloved – and divisive – part of the Aeneid. Book IV tells the story of Aeneas and Dido’s tryst in a cave while taking cover from a sudden rainstorm. Dido thinks she has married the Trojan prince, but she is heartbroken when Aeneas denies it and announces he is setting sail to Italy to fulfill his destiny. Heartbreak turns to rage, and Dido curses Aeneas and his descendants, mounts the altar of her own sacrifice, and kills herself.
