This seminar covers Book V of Virgil’s Aeneid. Having finally set themselves free from the alluring clutches of Dido’s Carthage, the Trojans land in Sicily where their countryman Acestes rules another group of refugees from holy Troy. The Trojans engage in a memorable display of strength and talent in funeral games in honor of Anchises. Juno, however, is quite aggrieved, and through her machinations the women in Aeneas’ party set fire to the ships to try and subvert the journey to Latium and force an end to the Trojans’ wanderings. We will read the entirety of Book V and discuss it in Latin.
