Menander was the master of Greek New Comedy: the playwright who gave us the mismatched lovers, scheming slaves, and tidy happy endings that Plautus and Terence carried over into Latin, and that comedy has been recycling ever since. Yet for most of history his plays survived only in fragments. In this course, we will read the Dyskolos, or “The Grouch,” his one nearly complete play, recovered from an Egyptian papyrus and published only in 1958, and discuss it in Ancient Greek.
