From Cicero to Erasmus, few Latin authors have escaped the influence of Terence’s profound wit and humane spirit. In this course, we will read his Heauton Timorumenos (The Self-Tormenter), in which appears the famous line, “I am human: I consider nothing human to be alien from me”, a sentiment seen by Renaissance authors as encapsulating the essence of humanism. The play abounds with unhappy loves, family drama, tricks and deceit, and none of it expressed without humor and humanity. You will improve your knowledge of colloquial Latin style and idiom, seeing how the language was spoken in the fervor and excitement of everyday life.
